(3 giorni/2 notti)

Brief description

Journey to discover the true unspoiled nature of the Maiella National Park, a strip of green land and wild flora, marked by centuries-old beech forests and majestic barren peaks, wildflower meadows and trails that lead to solitary hermitages perched or entrapped in stone.
The route takes in scenes of incomparable beauty, environments inhabited by otters, wolves, deer, wild boar and chamois. The walk ends at the hermitage of Santo Spirito, an articulated complex of buildings leaning on a rock parapet. Renovated by Pietro da Morrone (Pope Celestine V) in the 5th decade of the 13th century, in 1263 the hermitage received protection from Urban IV, and was incorporated into the Order of St. Benedict.

(Departing from Bocca di Valle) Level 4/5: Strenuous hiking or trekking in mountainous areas and high altitude. 5-7 hours of walking per day, on well-maintained, documented trails. The ascent/descent ranges from 1000 to 1500 meters. You may have to cross snowfields, not steep, or wade through streams. (Departing from Piana delle Mele) Level 3/5: Moderate hiking, 4-5 hours a day (excluding breaks) in mountainous areas, on well-maintained, documented trails, sometimes with steep gradients between 500 and 1000 meters. Requires a good knowledge of the mountain, good physical preparation, surefootedness, balance.

Equipment

What to pack: a water bottle, some patches (useful in case of blisters), disinfectant, bandages and gauze, insect repellent, sunscreen, a whistle.

The weather conditions in the mountains can change suddenly, so we recommend you dress in layers. For upper body, we suggest a water absorbent/heat expellent mesh T-shirt to maintain a balanced body temperature, so the skin breathes, and perspiration is absorbed or dries.

Then, a sweater, plus jacket or vest, better with detachable sleeves, a windbreaker (ex. hooded K-way) or a waterproof jacket with hood. Lower body: Pants must allow for comfortable movement. Socks must be thick to allow feet to be comfortable without being overly affected by the roughness of the terrain.

Recommended: lightweight and very comfortable boots, Gore-Tex-coated, to ensure dry feet. Bring a change of socks, pants and shirt, to be kept in a closed plastic bag inside your backpack to prevent from getting wet in the rain.
